The best AI PDF readers for Mac
Facts checked · We make Plum, and have tried to be fair.
On a Mac the useful questions are practical: is it a real Mac app, does it show you the PDF or only chat about it, can it edit, and where do your documents go?

Each tool on a Mac
Plum
Platforms: Mac (macOS 15 or later)
Built for the Mac in SwiftUI and PDFKit, keyboard-first, and made for long papers. Ask a question and the assistant turns to the page and highlights the lines it used. Papers are processed on your Mac, and you choose the AI: the built-in one, your own key for any OpenAI-compatible provider, or Claude Code or Claude Desktop over MCP. It is a reader only, with no editing, and still in early access.
PDF Expert
Platforms: Mac, iPhone, iPad
Readdle’s polished native editor for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, with PDF Copilot included in every plan. Its answers point to locations in the PDF, but it works one document at a time and requests are capped by a quota.
Adobe Acrobat with AI Assistant
Platforms: Mac, Windows, web, iOS, Android
The complete PDF toolkit on Mac, with an AI Assistant whose citations link back to the source. The right choice if you edit, sign, or fill PDFs as often as you read them. AI Assistant costs extra on some plans, and documents are processed by Adobe’s service.

UPDF
Platforms: Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, web
An affordable editor whose license also covers Windows, iPhone, and Android, with a lifetime option. UPDF AI adds chat across many PDFs, translation, and mind maps, but it is a separate subscription and its online features upload your documents.
ChatGPT
Platforms: Mac, Windows, web, iOS, Android
The strongest general reasoning of the group, with a native Mac app. It has no PDF viewer, so you read in Preview or another reader and switch to the chat to ask; answers can’t turn to the page. Documents are uploaded to OpenAI.
ChatPDF
Platforms: Web, with desktop and mobile apps
The quickest way to ask one PDF a question, with nothing to install. Citations jump to the passage, but it is a chat window beside a document rather than a reader, documents are uploaded to ChatPDF, and the free tier has a daily limit.
NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook)
Platforms: Web
Google’s research notebook, renamed Gemini Notebook in July 2026, runs in the browser with no Mac app. It is excellent for grounded answers across many sources at once, but it is a workspace rather than a reader, and documents are uploaded to Google.
