Where UPDF is better
- A full editor: editing, annotation, OCR, and conversion.
- One license across Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android, with a lifetime option.
- Translation and mind maps built into the AI assistant.
Where Plum is better
- The assistant works inside the reader: it turns to the page and highlights the exact lines it used, and only text it actually found.
- Bring your own key for any OpenAI-compatible provider, or connect Claude Code or Claude Desktop over MCP.
- Your PDFs are processed on your Mac; only the passages the assistant reads go to the AI.
- A native, keyboard-first Mac reader built for long papers, with citation previews and equations that copy as LaTeX.
